The plot is focused on an eccentric samurai,Gintoki Sakata (Shun Oguri), who works as freelancers  in "Yorozuya" (万事屋, "We do everything") to handle entrusting business. Kotaro Katsura (Masaki Okada), a patriot in the battle against Amanto, gets lost after injured by a mysterious attacker. Hidden in the shadow are the ronin Nizo Okada (Hirofumi Arai) , also known as “Hitokiri Nizo” for his impressive killing records, and the patriot Shinsuke Takasugi (Tsuyoshi Domoto) who previously worked with Gintoki to save this country. Takasugi acts as a major antagonist throughout the series, as he wants to bring the battle group back to life and destroy the bakufu. With a view to saving his comrades and this world, Gintoki comes forward bravely. The story starts with the most intensive battle in the warship floating in Edo.
